SEP Senior Advisor speaks on NBC News about the USDA approval of selling cultivated animal meat.

Paul Shapiro, the Better Meat Co. CEO, and SEP Senior Advisor, expresses the historical significance of USDA approval and what to expect in the future for cultivated meat. Cultivated meat, also known as cultured or cell-based meat, is genuine animal meat (including seafood) that is produced by cultivating animal cells directly and not through animal slaughter.

Paul Shapiro is author of the 2018 national bestseller Clean Meat: How Growing Meat Without Animals Will Revolutionize Dinner and the World. Paul is also the CEO of Better Meat Co. and host of the Business for Good Podcast. Better Meat Co. focuses on fermenting mycoprotein meat in an effort to create meat that does not harm animals and is cleaner for the environment.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently approved the sale of cultivated or cell-based chicken by two companies: Upside Foods and Eat Just Inc. In the NBC News interview with Paul, he briefly details the process of creating these meats. Paul discusses the benefits of this meat production, such as fewer carbon and other emissions, using less water and land, and not harming animals.

Following the USDA approval, cultivated meat products will be served in restaurants. Eat Just Inc. will be served in China Chilcano, a Chinese-Peruvian restaurant in Washington, D.C., which is made possible through a partnership with Chef José Andrés. Upside Foods will be served at Bar Crenn, a San Francisco wine bar. It will take time before these cultivated meats appear in stores, but with USDA approval, there are limitless possibilities.
