Carl Koval

Dr. Carl Koval is a Professor Emeritus in Chemistry at the University of Colorado Boulder and former Director of the Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis (JCAP). Carl joined the faculty at CU Boulder in 1980, where he became a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and served as Chair from 1998-2001 and 2015-18. He was the Faculty Director for the Initiative on Renewable and Sustainable Energy. Carl was also the founding Co-Director and later Associate Director for Research of the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute (RASEI), a joint institute between CU-Boulder and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). His research interests include electron transfer processes, photoelectrochemistry, membrane and electrochemical separations, and non-mechanical fluid pumping. At CU, Carl was supported by 47 separate research contracts and grants and collaborated with several current and former scientists at NREL.
Carl holds a BS from Juniata College and received a PhD in Chemistry from the California Institute of Technology. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Purdue University. Carl was the thesis advisor for 26 PhD students, five MS students, and five research associates. Carl’s research has resulted in 114 publications and 11 patents.
